While that volume mirrors a busy metropolitan regional hospital, the pathology seen is unique: The Clinical Spectrum: You are managing a profound volume of high-acuity, late-presentation pathology.
You will routinely manage resuscitations for severe sepsis, advanced rheumatic heart disease, advanced renal failure with critical hyperkalaemia, severe outback trauma, and acute presentations of complex intergenerational trauma. The Paediatric Volume: Roughly one-quarter of all ED presentations are paediatric.
You will see acute paediatric illnesses—from PSGN, ARF to profound dehydration. The Gateway to the Centre: As the only major acute medical facility for over a million square kilometres, you are the receiving end for the Central Australian Retrieval Service (CARS). You aren't just treating the town; you are treating the entire desert.
