Health and Safety Officer - Construction (Remote)

About the Role

Our client is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health and Safety Officer to join their team on a fully remote basis, overseeing safety protocols for construction projects in the Mossel Bay, Western Cape. This role is crucial for ensuring a safe working environment across all project sites by developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety programs. You will be responsible for risk assessments, incident investigations, and promoting a strong safety culture among all personnel, including those working remotely and on-site. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in relevant legislation and possesses excellent communication and training skills to foster a proactive safety mindset.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain robust health and safety management systems for construction sites.
• Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions.
• Deliver health and safety training programs to employees and subcontractors, both in-person and virtually.
• Advise management on all aspects of health, safety, and environmental legislation and best practices.
• Promote a positive safety culture through effective communication and engagement strategies across all project stakeholders.

Requirements

• Relevant qualification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, SAMTRAC).
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Health and Safety role within the construction industry.
• In-depth knowledge of South African OHS Act and related legislation.
• Proven ability to conduct risk assessments, develop safety plans, and manage incident investigations.
• Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills, adapted for a remote environment.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage compliance across multiple locations.
