About the Role

Our client, a forward-thinking organization focused on advancing sustainable practices in the Agriculture & Forestry sector, is seeking a dedicated Remote Agronomist. This position is entirely remote, allowing you to contribute your expertise from anywhere in South Africa. You will play a vital role in developing and advising on sustainable farming strategies, crop management best practices, soil health initiatives, and water conservation techniques for a diverse range of agricultural operations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong agronomic background, a deep understanding of environmental stewardship, and excellent communication skills to guide and support farmers and agricultural businesses.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide remote expert advice on crop selection, planting, fertilization, and pest/disease management for sustainable production systems.
• Develop and promote best practices for soil health improvement, including cover cropping, composting, and reduced tillage.
• Advise on water conservation strategies and efficient irrigation techniques tailored to specific regional conditions.
• Assist farmers in implementing integrated pest management (IPM) and integrated disease management (IDM) programs.
• Analyze farm data and provide recommendations for optimizing resource use (water, nutrients, energy) and minimizing environmental impact.
• Conduct virtual farm assessments and provide detailed reports with actionable recommendations.
• Stay informed about the latest research and innovations in sustainable agriculture and share knowledge with clients.
• Develop educational materials and deliver online training sessions on sustainable farming techniques.
• Collaborate with researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to promote sustainable agriculture.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, Sustainable Agriculture, or a related agricultural discipline.
• A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in agronomy, with a demonstrable focus on sustainable farming practices and soil health.
• In-depth knowledge of crop science, soil biology, nutrient cycling, and ecological farming principles.
• Experience with advising on water management and IPM strategies is highly desirable.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively advise clients remotely.
• Proficiency in using digital communication tools, data analysis software, and potentially GIS or farm management platforms.
• A self-starter attitude with the ability to manage workload and deliver high-quality advice independently in a remote setting.
• Passion for promoting environmental stewardship and the long-term viability of agricultural systems.
