Remote Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) - Health Informatics

About the Role

Our client, a global leader in health informatics and digital health solutions, is seeking an experienced and visionary Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) to lead their strategic initiatives in clinical information systems and healthcare technology adoption. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to contribute from anywhere within South Africa . The CMIO will play a critical role in bridging the gap between clinical practice and information technology, driving the adoption of innovative digital health tools to improve patient care, operational efficiency, and clinical research. You will be instrumental in shaping the future of healthcare technology by providing clinical leadership and strategic direction for all health informatics-related activities.

This role requires a deep understanding of both clinical workflows and health IT infrastructure, with a strong focus on patient outcomes and data integrity. This is a senior leadership role focused on transforming healthcare through technology, working entirely remotely.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide clinical leadership and strategic direction for the development, implementation, and optimization of health information systems.
• Oversee the integration of clinical data from various sources to enhance patient care coordination and clinical decision support.
• Ensure the effective adoption and utilization of EHR/EMR systems, telehealth platforms, and other digital health tools.
• Collaborate with IT, clinical teams, and stakeholders to define technology roadmaps and prioritize informatics projects.
• Champion data governance, security, and privacy initiatives to protect patient information.
• Drive innovation in digital health by identifying and evaluating emerging technologies.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures related to health informatics and clinical systems management.
• Conduct needs assessments and user satisfaction surveys to continuously improve health IT systems.
• Represent the organization in industry forums and contribute to the advancement of health informatics standards.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to informatics teams and clinical informaticists.

Requirements

• Medical Doctor (M.D.) with board certification, coupled with a strong background in Health Informatics or Information Technology.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in clinical practice and a minimum of 7 years in a health informatics leadership role (e.g., CMIO, Director of Health Informatics).
• Extensive experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR/EMR) systems, including implementation and optimization.
• Proven track record in leading digital transformation initiatives in healthcare.
• Deep understanding of healthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR, SNOMED CT) and interoperability principles.
• Familiarity with telehealth, mobile health (mHealth), and AI applications in healthcare.
• Excellent strategic thinking, leadership, and communication skills.
• Ability to effectively manage complex projects and engage diverse stakeholders.
• Commitment to patient safety, data privacy, and ethical use of health information.
• This is a fully remote position, requiring a reliable internet connection and ability to work independently.
