About the Role
Our client is looking for a dedicated Remote Data Privacy Counsel to build out their privacy legal function from the ground up, operating entirely remotely with a focus on South African operations. This role is crucial for ensuring the company adheres to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and other relevant data privacy regulations globally. You will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive data privacy policies, advising on data processing activities, and managing data breach responses. This is a unique opportunity for a privacy law expert to establish and lead privacy compliance efforts within a forward-thinking organization, working independently from anywhere.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain a robust global data privacy compliance program.
- Advise business teams on data privacy implications of new products, services, and marketing initiatives.
- Draft and review privacy notices, consent forms, and data processing agreements.
- Manage and respond to data subject access requests and regulatory inquiries.
- Lead investigations and remediation efforts in response to data breaches or privacy incidents.
- Conduct privacy risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies across the organization.
Requirements
- Admitted Attorney with specialized experience in data privacy and protection law (e.g., POPIA, GDPR).
- Minimum of 6 years of legal experience, with at least 3 years focused on privacy.
- In-depth knowledge of global data privacy regulations and best practices.
- Experience in conducting privacy impact assessments and developing privacy policies.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical business solutions.
