About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Remote Data Protection Lawyer to join their forward-thinking legal team. This role is critical in ensuring the organization complies with evolving global and local data privacy regulations, including POPIA. You will be responsible for advising on all aspects of data protection law, developing and implementing robust privacy frameworks, and managing data breach responses. This is an exceptional opportunity for a motivated legal professional to contribute significantly to the company's data governance strategy from anywhere, working in a fully remote capacity and shaping privacy practices in a data-centric world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice on data protection laws (e.g., POPIA, GDPR) and best practices.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive data privacy policies and procedures.
  • Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for new projects and systems.
  • Manage and respond to data subject access requests and regulatory inquiries.
  • Advise on data processing agreements, cross-border data transfers, and marketing consents.
  • Lead the response to data breaches, coordinating internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with a strong focus on Data Protection and Privacy law.
  • In-depth knowledge of POPIA, GDPR, and other relevant international privacy regulations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing privacy compliance programs.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and advisory skills.
  • Proficiency in managing workload effectively in a completely remote environment.
