Remote Environmental Compliance Officer

About the Role

Our client seeks a dedicated and knowledgeable Environmental Compliance Officer to join their remote workforce, supporting mining operations in the Benoni area and beyond. This role is essential for ensuring that all mining activities are conducted in strict adherence to environmental laws, regulations, and company policies. You will be responsible for monitoring environmental impact, developing mitigation strategies, and facilitating compliance reporting. This position offers the unique advantage of a fully remote setup, allowing you to contribute significantly to sustainable mining practices without the need for on-site presence, while impacting operations across diverse locations.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor environmental performance across mining sites, ensuring compliance with permits and legislative requirements.
• Develop and implement environmental management plans, including waste management, water quality, and rehabilitation strategies.
• Conduct regular environmental audits and inspections, identifying potential risks and areas for improvement.
• Prepare and submit environmental reports to regulatory authorities and internal management.
• Advise project teams on environmental best practices and regulatory requirements during project planning and execution.
• Investigate environmental incidents, recommend corrective actions, and track their implementation.
• Stay updated on evolving environmental legislation and industry best practices related to mining.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental management and compliance, preferably within the mining sector.
• In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation (e.g., NEMA, MPRDA) and permitting processes.
• Experience in conducting environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and developing Environmental Management Programmes (EMPs).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex regulations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in report preparation and stakeholder engagement.
