Remote Legal Counsel - Technology Focus

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled and adaptable Remote Legal Counsel with a focus on technology and intellectual property to join their forward-thinking legal team. This position is fully remote, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere within South Africa, while primarily supporting business functions and strategic initiatives originating from Bloemfontein. The role involves advising on technology-related contracts, data privacy, software licensing, and intellectual property protection. The ideal candidate is adept at navigating the complexities of the digital landscape, possesses strong drafting skills, and is comfortable working autonomously in a virtual environment, contributing to the company's innovation and legal integrity.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate technology-related agreements, including software licenses, SaaS agreements, and development contracts.
• Advise on data privacy regulations (e.g., POPIA) and assist in developing data protection strategies.
• Manage and protect the company's intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
• Provide legal guidance on e-commerce, cybersecurity, and online content matters.
• Conduct legal research on emerging technologies and their associated legal implications.
• Support the business units on legal aspects of product development and digital transformation initiatives.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, with a significant portion focused on technology law.
• Strong understanding of intellectual property law, data privacy regulations and commercial contracts.
• Experience with software licensing, open-source compliance and technology transfer agreements.
• Excellent remote communication, collaboration, and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and proactively manage a demanding workload.
• Familiarity with international data privacy laws is a plus.
