Remote Electrical Design Engineer - Solar Projects

About the Role

Our client is seeking a detail-oriented Remote Electrical Design Engineer with a specialization in Solar Projects to join their growing team, supporting initiatives based in the Paarl, Western Cape region. In this role, you will be responsible for the electrical design aspects of utility-scale and distributed solar energy systems. You will create comprehensive design packages, including schematics, layouts, and specifications, ensuring adherence to all relevant codes and standards. This position is fully remote, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to the solar industry's growth from anywhere, while collaborating closely with project development, engineering, and construction teams to bring solar energy solutions to life.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed electrical designs for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, including AC and DC configurations.
• Prepare electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, panel schedules, and wiring layouts using CAD and specialized software.
• Perform electrical calculations for system sizing, load balancing, and protection requirements.
• Select and specify electrical components such as inverters, transformers, switchgear, and cabling.
• Ensure designs comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local regulations, and utility interconnection standards.
• Provide remote technical support to project managers and construction teams during installation and commissioning.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design, with a significant focus on solar PV projects.
• Proficiency in solar design software (e.g., PVSyst, Helioscope) and AutoCAD or similar CAD platforms.
• Solid understanding of power electronics, AC/DC systems, and grid interconnection principles for solar installations.
• Knowledge of relevant electrical codes and safety standards applicable to solar energy systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills, excellent attention to detail, and effective communication for remote collaboration.
